Laon Historic or not?

Autumn 2025 and Rosie and Andrew Green were chatting with a classic car owning friend who was putting together a road trip with a Mercedes, Citroen. Mazda etc. plus he’d invited 12 other couples to join him and his wife on what was their seventh trip to Le Laon Historique. The friends sang the praises of the event and encouraged them to commit.

Andrew says nine months later we set off on our journey of discovery from various parts of the country and headed towards Laon. They live in mid Staffordshire and having decided to wrap le Laon Historique in a visit to Rouen before and Berck Sur Mer after, they headed to Portsmouth for the overnight ferry to Caen. They met up with another couple in their newly purchased Austin Healey Sprite and headed for the ferry terminal. It was here that the event really started to feel real to them as they joined the queue with many classic cars en-route to Laon.

As it turned out the trip was pretty eventful as things didn’t quite go to plan but undaunted they continued – you will have to read this the first article on the trip to find out what transpired.

Tally Ho Run

Held every 2 years, this 1 day tour covering around 100 miles is to raise money for Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield’s Cancer Charity, somewhere quite a few in the Notts Derby Area have spent far too much time in recent years.  Andrew Bradbury says they had a new start to the venue this year which was Welbeck Abbey near Worksop and the onsite Welbeck Abbey Brewery which was also their finishing point.

These are always well organised events, with organiser Tony being the main contact ably assisted by Noel who keeps coming up with the routes, something which he does very well as he manages to generally not use the same road twice and after 19 years of this event and then the annual Fathers Day Tour it is quite some achievement.

To help with distance accuracy, for the last couple of years Andrew has used an app called Rally Trip which records both the interim and total distances which he says is much more accurate than the car, as the mileage can run out quite a bit, with his car over-reading by about 8%, which he says is useful for speed as I am always going slower than I think, but not great for distance on events like these.

Worcester Area Does the IOW

Paul Catterall says that just after Easter 20 members from Worcestershire Area embarked on a 5/6 night trip to the Isle of Wight in 9 Stags and 2 modern cars.

A few stayed overnight at Lymington before catching the ferry on Sunday morning. With a couple of hours to spare before the ferry departed, Paul and Robert went down to the sea at Milford-on-Sea, and found an impromptu car show in one of the beach side car parks.

There were some interesting modern and classic cars there, but with black clouds looming they headed for the ferry. It was a short, sharp shower, so when they landed at Yarmouth on the west of the island they took the opportunity to stop at The Needles for some bracing fresh air and then drove down the stunning southern coastline along Military Road to reach their hotel in Ventnor.

The Royal Hotel in Ventnor proved an ideal base for their trip with comfortable rooms, delicious food and friendly and professional staff. They even had exclusive use of one of their car parks.

With lots of trips out and sights to be seen you will have to read the article to find out how they filled their days.
