Hebden Bridge Weekend

Andrew Bradbury’s report confirmed that, as always, it was an excellent weekend with sixteen members in 5 Stags, 2 TR’s and a 2000 saloon and then on Sunday they were joined by Nicky and Tony who brought his Alfa 4C.

They arrived in Hebden Bridge on Friday afternoon after taking a bit of a diversion up Cragg Vale (of Tour De France fame) Andrew took a photograph of his car in the same place as the one that had been taken when the car was new in 1975. The area hasn’t changed much so it wasn’t too difficult to find, but only after did he realise he had just taken one outside the wrong house!

Once parked up where they were staying, he walked into town to see the others all  driving through in convoy to their accommodation. Saturday was the day for newer cars, from NSU Ro80, Rover 800s, Lancia Stratos kit car, quite a lot of ‘90s cars and a very nice Datsun 260Z behind them which was sold on the day.  There was also a number of Stags from West Yorkshire, Lancashire plus a few stray ones, so probably around 30 in total.

This is also the local Steampunk weekend, so plenty to entertain you, it’s all very friendly and the whole town is involved one way or another.

They spent Saturday evening at a pub called the Dog and Gun in nearby Leeming and had a really good night, the food was excellent and the drive back to their accommodation through open countryside was quiet with spectacular scenery.

Sunday is the day mainly for older cars, somehow with the Stags, we are able to do both. Again it was a very busy, sunny and the ladies went for coffee again. The oldest two cars were both built in 1925, the oldest motorcycle in 1917. As the previous day there were a few rarities, such as a Gordon Keeble and a home build using an Armstrong Siddeley chassis, with a Jaguar V12 engine and aluminium boat tail sports body, mpg in single figures according to the owner. Two of our members came home with prizes, but neither in Stags. Steve got 2nd prize for his immaculate TR250 in the sports car category, behind a Lancia Beta Zagato and Tony and Nicky got 1st prize for Tony’s Alfa 4C in the supercar class.

Oxfordshire Summer Run

Jason Williams says that on a sunny Sunday morning in July, 16 members of the Oxfordshire Stag Group gathered at Jason and Catie’s house for the essential pre-run rituals: hot drinks, cake and a briefing on the day’s activities. The refreshments were very well received – as refreshments involving cake generally are – and there was plenty of time for a chat before they remembered that they had a lunch booking to get to. With maps in hand and engines ready, the cars set off in dribs and drabs for a scenic tour of East Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

The route took them through a string of lovely villages including Brill, Oving, Whitchurch and Wingrave, with the usual mixture of admiring glances, narrow lanes and the quiet hope that everyone had read the same instructions. A splinter group inadvertently back tracked on themselves followed by a couple of other “blind leading the blind” Stags. Their day was thankfully saved by reference to Google Maps and all were able to get to the destination.

The organisers took a discreet shortcut to arrive at the lunch venue early and check that everything was in order and were delighted to find that the pub had not only expected them, but had also put up bunting and prepared an area of the village green opposite the pub for the Stags to park. It made a splendid sight as the cars gradually arrived, joined by a couple of members who had come direct.

Once inside the pub, 22 diners were comfortably seated across two large tables. The food was excellent, the company even better, and conversation flowed as freely as you would expect from a group who can happily discuss cars, routes and mechanical mysteries for hours. To add a little light entertainment, Jason had arranged a quick Stag quiz with, it must be admitted, some assistance from ChatGPT. There was a minor query over some of the answers, but in the finest traditions of village green motoring events, the quizmaster’s decision was declared final and mildly disputed in good humour – did Bergerac drive a Stag, or was it his ex-wife Deborah? After lunch, everyone went their separate ways, agreeing that it had been a thoroughly enjoyable day out. Good weather, good roads, good food and good company made for a winning combination – and the general feeling was that we really ought to do this sort of thing more often.

Guernsey Stags Remake History

Derek Rossiter has been a member of SOC for about a year and had been looking for a Stag while also building a double garage in which to house her.

He finally bought his Stag in April and had some work done on her by none other than Pete Edwards of The Stag Workshop in Poole, Dorset. Once completed, he brought her over on the ferry so he could enjoy some of the summer with her.

Last month he managed to get four of the five SOC members that reside in Guernsey together for an impromptu photo. Four as one of the members does not currently
have a car.

One of the members, (Vince Cockett), had his Stag appear on the front cover of the September 1992 magazine, issue 145 so whilst on their trip Derek managed to recreate it.
